ÖGHMP - Austrian Society for Hygiene, Microbiology and Preventive Medicine
Mission & History:
The Austrian Society for Hygiene, Microbiology and Preventive Medicine (ÖGHMP) is a scientific society that promotes research, education and practice in the fields of hygiene, microbiology and preventive medicine. The society was founded in 1925 and has about 800 members from various disciplines and professions. From the very beginning, our society followed a collaborative, multisectoral, and interdisciplinary approach and included representatives from human and veterinary medicine, agriculture, and natural resources. As such, our society is covering the different sectors of the so-called One Health approach, which is based on the triad of animal, human, and environmental health.
Our goals:
- To promote hygiene, microbiology and preventive medicine in all its subfields in scientific and practical aspects,
- To encourage cooperation among Austrian hygienists, microbiologists and preventive physicians and with scientists of other fields in the interest of scientific progress,
- To foster international cooperation in the field of hygiene, microbiology and preventive medicine,
- To provide advice on hygiene, microbiology and preventive medicine to public authorities, public bodies and interest groups, as well as to individuals and companies involved in public health and population hygiene,
- To support young scientists from relevant fields by awarding scientific prizes.
Our activities:
We organize scientific meetings, publish guidelines and recommendations, issue expert opinions on disinfectants and procedures, and cooperate with national and international organizations.
